Caring For A Sick Dog

July 1, 2022
Is your pup recovering from illness, injury, or a surgical procedure? Whether Fido has an upset tummy or is struggling with chronic pain and/or ongoing illness, he’ll need some extra TLC as he recovers. A veterinarian discusses caring for a sick pooch in this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair, TX animal clinic.

Bed

Make sure your pet has a comfy spot to recuperate in. If you have a large house, you may want to get a few extra beds, so Fido can still hang out in whatever room you’re in. If your pooch is vomiting or getting diarrhea, get a mattress protector and a washable throw blanket.

Medication

Giving Fido his medicine can be tricky, especially once he figures out what is going on. Pill pockets can be helpful for this. Flavored medicine is also great, though this of course would depend on what is available and what your canine companion needs. You can also try sneaking the pill into something appetizing. A small meatball is a good option.

Mobility

If your furry friend is having trouble walking, you may need to get puppy pads or a small indoor lawn spot for him. You may also be able to carry him outside using a harness or towel to support him. Diapers may be an option, but you can’t leave them on too long. You’ll also need to clean Fido’s bottom to prevent soiling or scalding. Ask your vet for specific care tips.

Grooming

Gently brushing Fido will remove dead fur and dander. This will help him feel better, just like personal care helps cheer invalids up.

Love

Our canine pals often do much better emotionally when they feel loved and cared for. Pay lots of attention to your pup! You don’t want to stress or over-exert Fido. However, just giving him a quick forehead kiss as you go by may lift his spirits.

Veterinarian

The advice above is based on the assumption that Fido has been diagnosed and treated, and is recuperating. If your pet is extremely ill, you may need to have a serious conversation with your vet about his prognosis and quality of life. This is difficult, we know, but that heartbreak is the price we all eventually pay for Fido’s unconditional love and loyalty. Please contact Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair, TX animal clinic, anytime. We’re here to help!
