Tips For Taking Holiday Pet Photos

Happy Holidays! One of our favorite things at this time of year is seeing all the photos of our patients. Pets somehow manage to be extra cute at this time of year, regardless of whether they are playing with new toys or just curled up in their beds, dreaming of mice (or sugarplums). Of course, capturing those charming moments can be easier said than done sometimes. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cypress, TX pet clinic, a vet offers advice on getting that perfect shot.

Background

Usually, you want to choose a background that contrasts with your pet’s coat. Of course, you can also have fun with the opposite effect. A picture of a white dog against a snowbank may be extra adorable because you can barely see Fido. We also love seeing ‘void kitty’ pictures of black cats, where you can only see Fluffy’s eyes.

Settings

Don’t be shy about experimenting with settings. If you want to get a picture of your pet hard at play, choose a quick exposure. You can also experiment with the focus. Try snapping your furry bff against the Christmas tree, and blurring the background. You can also try getting down on the floor and snapping pictures from Fluffy and Fido’s eye level.

Distraction

Does your pet have a habit of looking super adorable … and then moving or looking away the moment you get your camera? (Fluffy and Fido may very well be doing this on purpose, but that’s another topic.) Making a noise to get their attention. Many pet camera apps have this feature built in. You can also use a sound on your phone.

Pets At Rest

After a long day of looking cute and begging for treats, Fluffy and Fido will probably be pretty tired, and may be ready for a nap. A new bed is a great gift … and a great prop for a photo shoot. Sleeping pets are the purrfect touch for those cozy holiday scenes!

Little Pets

Smaller pets can also take some adorable pictures. Place your gerbil on a little sleigh, or put a tiny Santa hat on your hamster. Just don’t let your pint sized pal eat their props!
