Taking Your Dog To The Vet

January 15, 2023
Is your canine buddy due for an appointment at the clinic? Fido would probably rather go to a park than visit us, but proper veterinary care is crucial to his health. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cypress, TX animal clinic, a vet offers a few helpful tips on taking your pooch to the doctor.

Tire Him Out

Fido will be much calmer if you take him for a walk and/or play with him before bringing him in. It’s definitely a good idea to burn off those zoomies. This isn’t just about petiquette: it’s both safer and easier to examine Fido when he isn’t bouncing with nervous energy.

Follow Recommended Schedules

Your dog’s care needs will change over time. Puppies and senior dogs will need to come in a bit more often than a healthy adult pooch would.

Make It Fun

Help Fido form a positive association with going to the vet. Give him a special treat after his appointment, or take him to his favorite park or pet store.

Ask Questions

This is a wonderful time for you to get some specific advice on your canine pal’s care needs. We’re always happy to help educate our clients, and just do whatever we can to help them keep their pets happy and healthy. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or care tips!

Stay Calm

Dogs are very astute at picking up on our emotions. Try not to get nervous, even if you’re worried that your furry friend may have something serious going on. Fido may get uneasy if he senses that you are distressed.

Desensitization Training

One thing you can do is get your pup used to being handled. Teach Fido that he’ll get a snack for having his paws, ears, or mouth touched.

Make Notes

Sometimes small behavioral changes can signal big problems. If your pet is doing something that seems off, let the vet know! For instance, you may have noticed your Fido passing a lot of gas recently. In some cases, this is nothing unusual. However, if your pooch is suddenly a lot gassier than he was, and you aren’t sure why, it may be a sign that something is off. Remember, there are no bad questions!
