Fido’s Barking Habits

Just like people, dogs all have their own vocal styles. Some are very quiet, and only bark if someone’s at the door. Others will speak up about anything and everything … or sometimes nothing at all. Fido Senses Something Unusual

Fido’s nose and ears are both much more acute than ours are. Our canine pals may also be sensitive to things like pressure changes or static electricity. Your furry buddy could be trying to let you know there’s something wrong!

Attention

Dogs are very sociable, and love spending time with their humans. Fido is also quite smart. This is generally a good thing, but it can backfire. If you pet your dog every time he barks, you may have inadvertently taught him that he gets rewarded for making noise. Talk to your vet or a behavioral therapist.

Boredom

Having a dog is in some ways a lot like having a toddler, the main difference being that children continue to develop beyond that adorable stage. Why is this relevant? Fido may be complaining that he’s bored, just as a little kid might. Make sure your pup has plenty of toys, and provide him with lots of walks and playtime.

Fear

Our canine companions can be quite emotional, just as people can. Fido may be scared of the vacuum cleaner, the mailman, or any number of things. If your pooch seems extremely distressed, ask your vet or a professional behaviorist for advice. Otherwise, it’s okay to pet him and comfort him.

Intruder Alert

One of the best things about Fido is the fact that he makes a great (and adorable) security system. Whether it’s a pizza delivery guy, the neighbor’s cat, or someone you weren’t expecting, you can probably count on your furry friend to let you know there’s somebody around.

Distress

Fido may also bark if he’s feeling hurt, hungry, or uncomfortable. Being isolated can also upset your pooch, causing him to speak up. Keep your pet’s tail wagging by providing him with great TLC!
