Beach Hazards for Dogs

July 15, 2020

Are you planning to take Fido to the beach this summer? Many of our canine pals love getting a chance to run and play in the surf. However, the beach can be dangerous for both people and pups … even those who are good swimmers! In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair animal hospital, a veterinarian lists some beach hazards for dogs.

Heat

Dogs can overheat very quickly in summer. Fido will get hot and thirsty after just a few minutes of running and playing at the shore. Make sure you bring plenty of water along for your canine buddy. If you’re planning to stay a while, bring an umbrella for him too, as well as a cooler with some ice for his water. You can also wet a bandana and hang it around his neck.

Surf

Some of our canine companions absolutely love swimming. Others? Not so much. Regardless of what end of the spectrum your pup falls under, you’ll need to keep a close eye on him. Fido will be over his head in just a few feet of water! It’s also very easy for dogs to get caught in currents. Never leave your furry friend unattended near water, even for just a few minutes.

Doggy Shenanigans

Fido definitely has a knack for getting himself in trouble. Make sure your pooch knows—and obeys—basic doggy obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, and Come!

Paw Injuries

Dogs’ paw pads are very sensitive, especially when they’re wet. Fido could get a nasty cut from running around on sharp shells, rocks, or broken glass. He can also get painful blisters from hot tar or sand. Keep your four-legged friend on soft ground as much as you can, and use paw balm on his furry feet.

Litter

Unfortunately, it isn’t uncommon to find food scraps and other litter on the beach. While wild birds usually snap up anything edible, Fido may still come across a chicken wing someone dropped or a dead fish that washed ashore. These are not things you want your pet messing with! This is why it’s a good idea to teach your pooch the commands to Drop it and Leave it!
