Food

Many foods that are popular at picnics and barbeques are toxic to Fido. Don’t let your canine buddy have garlic, onions, or scallions; avocados; pitted fruits; grapes or raisins; raw dough; alcohol; or products containing xylitol. If you’re grilling, keep your pup away from the barbeque, and make sure he doesn’t get a hold of any bones or barbeque skewers.

Heat

Texas can get pretty hot in July. Make sure Fido has plenty of fresh, cool water, and watch for signs that he may be overheating. Heavy panting is one of the most common ones. If your furry friend seems too hot, get him out of the sun, give him some water, and call your vet.

Fireworks

Fireworks can be very scary for Man’s Best Friend. Keep your dog indoors as much as possible on the Fourth, especially after dark. When the celebrations begin, put Fido in a quite back room, and turn a TV or radio on to mask the noise. You may also want to get a pet-calming shirt. Also, make sure your canine pal is microchipped, and is wearing current ID tags.

Paw Care

Dogs can get painful burns and blisters on their paws from running around on hot tar, sand, or asphalt. Use paw balm or wax to protect Fido’s furry feet, and keep him on soft surfaces as much as possible, especially after he’s been swimming.

Swimming Safety

Going swimming? Make sure that Fido knows basic doggy obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, and Come, before letting him go near the water. If you are going boating, or if your pooch doesn’t know how to swim, play it safe by putting a doggy lifejacket on him.
