Caring for a Guinea Pig

May 1, 2016
Are you considering adopting a Guinea pig? These tiny furballs, also known as cavies, are super cute, and make wonderful pets! Guinea pigs are not difficult to care for, but it is very important for you to understand their basic needs. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cypress, TX veterinary clinic, a local vet discusses Guinea pig care.

Diet

Proper nutrition is essential to your cavy’s health and well-being. We recommend offering your little buddy plenty of fresh grass hay, such as Timothy hay. Your Guinea pig can have commercial pellets for breakfast and dinner. To round out your adorable pet’s nutritional needs, you’ll also need to offer some fresh produce. Be sure to include plenty of foods that contain Vitamin C, which is very important for Guinea pigs. Ask your vet for specific nutritional recommendations, including portion sizes, suitable treats, and safe and unsafe foods.

Habitat

Making sure your cavy is comfortable in his cage is very important! One Guinea pig will need a cage that is at least 7.5 square feet. If you get your pet some buddies, you’ll need a bigger habitat. A wire cage with a solid floor is a good option. You’ll need to add a suitable substrate, such as aspen. You can also use fleece blankets. Avoid pine or cedar substrates, which are toxic to small animals. Your furry pal will also need a hidey-hole, food dishes, and a water bottle.

Toys

Living in a cage can get a bit dull, so offer your tiny pet lots of fun toys. Include plenty of chew toys, so your cavy can keep his teeth healthy. Some good options are wood, wicker, paper, and cardboard items. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on toys: you can make all sorts of cute DIY cavy toys out of common household items. Just be sure to avoid anything coated with varnish, stain, or paint. You’ll also want to stay away from items that have small pieces, sharp edges, or dangling strings.

Handling

Handle your Guinea pig gently and frequently, so he learns to trust you. Offer treats and toys by hand to help him feel safe and loved. You may find your tiny pet has a huge personality!
