National Dog Biscuit Day

February 15, 2016
Did you know that February 23rd is National Dog Biscuit Day? We suspect our canine friends think every day is Dog Biscuit Day, but we checked! This is a great time to show your furry pal some extra TLC, and perhaps indulge him with a few extra treats. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, a Cypress, TX vet discusses Fido’s favorite snack.

Homemade Goodies

Do you like baking? This is a great time to whip up a batch of customized doggy biscuits. Try a peanut butter and banana recipe, or wheat germ and bacon bits. There are countless options online. You can also customize your furry friend’s snacks by adding fun extras like shredded cheese, bits of cooked meat, or dog-safe fruits and veggies like pumpkin puree or sweet potato. Just be sure to use only ingredients that are safe for your canine buddy. Some things to avoid include chocolate; garlic and onions; grapes and raisins; avocados; and products containing xylitol. Ask your vet for specific nutritional recommendations.

Begging

We know, Fido is very, very good at making us want to fork over treats. That cute wagging tail and those big, pleading eyes are extremely effective in getting us to hand out tasty snacks. Don’t fall for it! Begging is bad doggy manners, and it also plays a large role in canine obesity. Treats are fine, and are even beneficial, but don’t overdo it. You’re not doing your furry little actor any favors by overindulging him, as carrying extra weight is very dangerous for your pet’s health.

Buying Dog Biscuits

Pay close attention to the food and snacks you give your pet. When you go shopping for Fido, check labels. If you can’t identify most of the ingredients, it’s probably best to go with another brand. We also recommend getting treats made in North America, as overseas manufacturers aren’t necessarily well-regulated.

Recalls

Recalls are, unfortunately, all too common in this day and age. While there is no way to guarantee that any product is 100% safe, you can stay on top of recall information. Visit the FDA pet food recall page here. Or, try the AMVA one, which can be found here. Ask your vet for more information. Is Fido due for shots or an exam? Call us! At Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cypress, TX veterinary clinic, your pet will get the best possible care!
