Cute Ways to Pamper Guinea Pigs

September 15, 2019
Have you recently adopted a Guinea pig? Are you considering getting one of these little guys? Guinea pigs—also known as cavies—are extremely cute and lovable little pets. They’re also quite easy keepers, and are typically very gentle. Of course, animals of every shape and size deserve to be safe, comfortable, and happy. But how does one keep a cavy content? A vet offers some tips in this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair animal clinic.

Buddies

It’s important to understand that Guinea pigs should always have a buddy or two. These little guys get very sad and depressed without any roommates! In fact, they get so lonely that it is now illegal in Switzerland to keep just one. Keep cavies in same-sex pairs or groups.

Cozies

Cozies are just as cute as they sound. These are basically tiny sleeping bags or tents for Guinea pigs. You can buy them online, or get a pattern and make your own.

Toys

Because Guinea pigs have open-rooted teeth, they can develop some very painful dental issues if they can’t wear their little choppers down by chewing. Provide your furry pals with lots of suitable chew toys. You’ll find some great DIY options online!

Penthouse

Guinea pigs need quite a bit more space than other little pets. For two cavies, we recommend getting a cage that is at least 10 square feet. The more furballs you have, the more room they’ll need. If you want to increase your pets’ living space without taking up much room, get a cage with more than one story.

Free Time

Life in a cage can get quite dull! Your pet will appreciate having some free time to play and explore. This is a great chance for you to pet and play with your little buddy. Don’t be surprised if you find that your tiny furball is actually quite cuddly. Guinea pigs are more affectionate than other small pets. In fact, some like to sleep in their owners’ laps!

Treats

Like any other pet, Guinea pigs love treats. Apples, cucumbers, bananas, carrots, and green peppers are all foods cavies can have once in a while, but shouldn’t eat every day. Ask your vet for specific advice. Do you have questions about Guinea pig care? We can help! Contact us here at Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair animal clinic.
