Summer is here! Our canine pals all have their own opinions about the heat. Some love to swim and play, while others are uncomfortably hot at this time of year. Older dogs in particular often have trouble with hot weather, as they just don’t have the stamina of their younger counterparts. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair animal clinic, a vet offers some advice on keeping a senior dog happy and healthy in summer.

Water

Make sure Fido always has plenty of water. You may want to get an automated waterer or a pet fountain. If you have a large home or more than one dog, set out multiple water stations.

Heat

Brushing your pooch regularly will help get dead fur and dander out of his coat, helping him stay cooler. Fido may also enjoy splashing in a kiddie pool. Cold snacks will also get that tail going.

Schedule

Keep Fido indoors as much as possible during the hottest parts of the day. Mornings and evenings are a better time for walking and playing with your furry buddy, as it won’t be quite as hot.

Good Bed

Make sure your old friend has a comfy bed. When it’s really hot, consider putting an ice pack on Fido’s bed, under a towel. You can also get a cooling pad or jacket.

Paw Care

Younger dogs often grind their claws down running around on tar or asphalt. Older pooches, however, often have long nails. This can be quite painful, and can exacerbate health issues, like arthritis and hip dysplasia. Keep your four-legged friend’s nails trimmed! Also, be careful with where you walk your pup. Fido could get painful paw burns from walking on hot surfaces. Use paw balm to protect those furry feet.

Swimming

Your canine buddy will slow down as he ages, and won’t be as active as he once was. However, Fido will still need regular exercise, as otherwise his muscles may atrophy. Swimming can be a great way for your pooch to get his workout in. The water will support your cute pet’s weight, making it easy on his bones and joints. Of course, every dog is different.
