Obesity in Cats

March 15, 2016
Is your cat getting a bit pudgy? If Fluffy is, well, not just fluffy, her health could be at risk. Being overweight or obese can cause or contribute to many dangerous medical problems in our feline friends! In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cypress, TX veterinarian discusses chubby kitties.

Dangers of Obesity

Those extra pounds can increase your kitty’s chances of developing many serious health troubles, including heart disease, liver problems, diabetes, and even cancer. Cats that are overweight or obese also are more likely to have skin problems, or to have complications after surgery or anesthesia.

Causes of Obesity

It probably won’t be much of a shock to learn that kitties’ fondness for sleeping, especially when combined with a 24-hour buffet, are the main factors behind feline obesity. Age can also play a role: cats often slow down as they grow older, and become even sleepier, so they often don’t get enough exercise. It’s worth noting that cats who eat only dry food are somewhat more prone to becoming obese than kitties who get canned food. This is because many kibble formulas, especially lower quality ones, contain a lot of carbs. Last but not least, overfeeding is another issue. Giving Fluffy just 10 calories too much each day can lead your feline buddy to gain a pound a year!

Keeping Fluffy Fit

To keep your sleepy furball active, play with her every day. Even a few 5-minute sessions will be beneficial. Use interactive toys that you can control, like wand toys, to really pique Fluffy’s interest and get her engaged. Also, make sure your kitty has plenty of fun toys to play with when she’s home alone.

Helping Your Pet Lose Weight

If your furball needs to lose weight, be sure to consult your vet before making any changes to her menu. Never put Fluffy on a crash diet. This is very bad for her metabolism, and could make her very sick! Your feline pal will need to take off those extra pounds slowly in order to lose weight without endangering her health. Ask your vet for specific nutritional recommendations, including portion sizes. Do you know or suspect that your cat needs to lose weight? Is Fluffy due for shots or an exam? Call Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cypress, TX animal clinic, today! We are here to provide your pet with excellent veterinary care.
