Lost Dog Awareness and Prevention

June 15, 2021
Have you ever had a dog go missing? If so, you’re not alone. Every year, as many as 10 million pets are lost or stolen. As many as one in three get lost at some point in their life. Sadly, many of them never find their way back home.  Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep your canine buddy from joining those statistics. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, a Cy-Fair vet discusses keeping Fido safe and sound at home.

Prevention

Following some basic precautions can go a long way towards keeping your pooch from going missing. First and foremost, don’t let your four-legged friend around off-leash. If you have a yard for your cute pet to chase squirrels around in, make sure that your fencing is secure and that your gate closes securely. You’ll also need to keep a close eye on Fido at times where there’s an elevated risk of him getting out, such as when you’re hosting guests. It’s very easy for pups to slip out an open door as someone is coming in or out! Finally, keep your canine friend indoors when things might get loud, such as during thunderstorms or at times when there may be fireworks.

Precautions

When it comes to pet care, an ounce of prevention is sometimes worth a ton of cure. Make sure Fido is microchipped and wearing ID tags. Be sure to keep your information current in the chip manufacturer’s database. Getting your furry buddy fixed is important, too. Dogs are much more likely to run off looking for love if they haven’t been fixed. Training is also crucial. Don’t underestimate the importance of teaching your pooch simple commands like Stay and Come.

How To Help

If you love animals, you may find it rewarding to try and help lost pups get back home. One thing you can do is spread awareness about lost dogs. Share posts about local pets that have gone missing, or ones about stray or loose pets people have seen. If you have time, you can even try to match lost and found ads. You never know: you could help reunite a missing, beloved pooch with his worried family, just with a few keystrokes!  Do you want to learn more about keeping your dog happy, healthy, and safe?
