Your Sleepy Cat

October 1, 2017
Is your kitty sleeping right now? There’s a good chance that the answer to that question is yes. Our feline pals certainly are drowsy little furballs! Fluffy sleeps about 16 hours a day on average, but can snooze up to 20 hours a day. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair vet clinic, a local vet discusses Fluffy’s sleeping habits.

Why Are Cats So Tired?

Did you know that cats sleep more than almost any other mammal? Only possums and a few types of bats sleep more than kitties. Theoretically, there are a few reasons for Fluffy’s perpetual fatigue. Felines do spend lots of energy in small periods of time when they are hunting. Cats also have a hard time cooling down if they overheat. That said, every other predator on the planet seems to get by on a measly 8-12 hours of sleep. Maybe looking cute and plotting world domination are really exhausting!

Fluffy’s Napping Spots

One of the ways your kitty shows her personality is in her choice of napping spots. Some furballs love curling up under blankets, while others want to snuggle up in a quiet closet or under a bed. Your cat will probably rotate from one spot to another for her morning, mid-morning, afternoon, and evening naps. Offer Fluffy plenty of options to choose from by setting out lots of comfy beds for her. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on this: for some of our feline friends, a soft blanket folded up and placed in a box or wicker basket is a little slice of heaven.

Lap Cats

Cats love warm, cozy napping spots. Your furball may snooze in a sunbeam or curl up near a heater in cold weather. Of course, your kitty may also decide that the most comfortable spot for her to nap in is your lap! This may be one of Fluffy’s most charming attributes. There’s no better way to unwind after a busy day than to settle in with a good book or movie and a purring cat!

Dreaming Kitties

In case you were wondering, cats do dream. No one knows what they dream about, but we suspect squirrels, boxes, and trees may factor in. Please contact Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair pet hospital, for all your sleepy cat’s veterinary care needs. We are dedicated to providing excellent care!
