Fido’s Barbeque Petiquette

There are many things to love about living in the Lone Star State. One thing is for sure: we Texans know how to barbeque! Cooking up some burgers, ribs, or brats on a grill is a great way to spend time with family and friends. Of course, our canine pals are also part of the family! Fido loves a good barbeque as much as we do. Just be sure to keep your pet’s safety first. Begging

Begging is bad doggy manners, even if it is completely adorable. If your pet turns into a furry little actor at the very mention of food, you’ll need to be very careful when bringing Fido to grill-outs. Many of our favorite foods are toxic to dogs! Never let your pup have grapes, currants, or raisins; garlic or onions; avocados; pitted fruits; meat on the bone; alcohol; chocolate; nuts; or raw dough or yeast. Anything containing xylitol is also a no-no. Just give your pooch a plain burger, brat, or hotdog.

Trash

Man’s Best Friend can be very opportunistic, and may try to go through the trash in search of leftovers. This can be a very dangerous habit, as garbage can contain things like skewers, cans and can lids, bones, tin foil, plastic wrap, and other unsafe items. Use a trashcan with a secure lid.

Heat

Texas summers can get pretty hot, so keep a close eye on Fido. If you notice him panting heavily, immediately get him out of the sun and give him some water. If symptoms persist, call your vet immediately.

Prevention

Make sure your canine companion is current on his vaccinations and parasite control products. Fido should also be microchipped and wearing ID tags. If the weather is really hot, use paw balm or wax to protect his furry feet.

Safety

Fido can get into all sorts of mischief at barbeques. One dangerous time is when people are coming or going. You don’t want to risk your furry best friend bolting out through an open gate!
