Helping Your Rescue Dog Adjust

May 15, 2023

May 20th is Rescue Dog Day! Adopting a rescue dog can be a very beautiful and rewarding experience. Of course, it’s important to get Fido started out on the right paw in his new home. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your local Cypress, TX animal hospital, a vet offers some advice on helping Fido settle in.

Walk It Out

Take Fido for a stroll before you bring him inside. He’ll naturally feel calmer once he has an idea of what his surroundings are. This also helps him burn off any extra energy, and ease the transition a bit.

Offer A Safe Place

Many rescue dogs have gone through some rough times. Fido may really appreciate the simple luxuries, such as a comfy bed, lots of toys, and just generally having a safe, quiet place to relax in. Start him out in a quiet room or corner. Don’t be surprised if he sleeps a lot at first: that’s normal for pups as they recuperate from not only past traumas, but also from the stress of being in a shelter.

Consistency

Consistency is key when it comes to helping pets feel safe and secure. Keep your furry friend on a steady routine for walks, playtime, meals, and, if necessary, training. Be consistent, but patient, with house rules.

Positive Reinforcement

Dogs are wonderful, but they aren’t exactly perfect. Fido may have some quirks or bad habits. He may also act up when you’re out. (This is often a sign of separation anxiety, which is common in rescues.) Don’t punish your pup for mishaps. You can reprimand him verbally, but anything beyond that could make him feel scared, confused, or defensive. Focus on rewarding good behavior.

Veterinary Care

A full exam is definitely in order. If Fido is a mixed breed, and/or you aren’t sure exactly what his family tree looks like, consider getting a doggy DNA test. This can help reveal personality traits and any potential health issues he may be susceptible to.

TLC

Last but certainly not least, just focus on providing great care and making your canine buddy feel safe and loved. You may not see changes overnight, but rather a steady, gradual growth. Adopting a rescue dog is a beautiful thing.
