Chihuahua Appreciation Day was May 14th! The Chihuahua is a small dog with a huge personality. This little guy has definitely made some adoring fans. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, a Cy-Fair veterinarian discusses this adorable pooch.
Basics
The Chihuahua is named after the region he originated in: the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Fido is the world’s smallest dog breed. He’s also one of the oldest! Scientists recently discovered that the DNA of Mexican dogs from 1000 years ago matched that of the Chihuahua. The Chihuahua’s ancestors may have been larger than the pint-sized pooch we know today. They may have been bred with the Chinese crested dog, which resulted in smaller (and smaller) pups. Another fun fact about the Chihuahua? They’re quite long lived, and can live up to 20 years.
Care Tips
Small breeds do have some specific care needs. You’ll need to use a harness on your furry buddy, rather than a collar, so you don’t accidentally choke him. Chihuahuas also get chilly very easily, so your pet will likely need a jacket for cooler days. Finally, don’t let your canine pal become obese. That would put a lot of strain on his body, especially his bones and joints.
Temperament
Chihuahuas can make great companion dogs. They are very loving and affectionate, and form very strong bonds with their humans. However, don’t let that cute face fool you. These little guys can be pretty spicy! Apparently, Fido hasn’t realized that he’s a fraction of the size of most dogs. He apparently sees himself as a Great Dane!
Training
One issue we sometimes see in Chihuahuas is a lack of training. Many people think that, because Fido is the size of a chubby squirrel, he doesn’t really need education. This isn’t the case, though. Chihuahuas can be a bit pushy, and they sometimes nip at people’s ankles or charge bigger dogs. Training will also help you stop your pet from approaching dangerous areas.
Chi-lebrities
Several Chihuahuas have become celebrities, and a few have even attained iconic status. The most famous may very well be Gidget, the beloved Taco Bell mascot. Then there’s Ren, the sarcastic—and somewhat excitable–half of the animated duo Ren and Stimpy. Fido also was the star of the movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua.Do you have questions about Chihuahua care?
