Protecting Your Dog From Rattlesnakes

Texas is home to an amazing variety of wildlife. That natural biodiversity is just one of the many reasons we love living in the Lone Star State. However, not all of Texas’ wild inhabitants are friendly. In fact, one particular critter, the rattlesnake, can be deadly to both people and pets. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair vet clinic, a vet offers some tips on keeping your dog safe from rattlesnakes.

Training

Training is at the top of the list here, and with good reason! It’s very important for you to be able to call your pet away from potential hazards. Make sure Fido knows and obeys basic doggy obedience commands.

Vigilance

When walking Fido, pay close attention to the terrain. It’s also probably best to leave the earbuds at home. You don’t want to miss that telltale rattle! At night, take a flashlight with you, and watch where both you and your canine buddy are stepping.

Property

Taking a bit of time to make your property less appealing to snakes will definitely be worth your while. Erecting a solid four-foot fence can help quite a bit. You’ll also want to pick up debris piles, and fill in holes under sheds and garages. If you have a drainage cover, use screens or mesh to make it snake-proof. Also, if you have a garden or fruit trees, pick up fallen produce immediately. Otherwise, it will attract things like rats and mice, which snakes like to eat.

Choosing Spots

Dogs are very curious, and love to nose around in nooks and crannies. This, unfortunately, is often where snakes like to hide. Don’t let your furry pal investigate potential snake habitats! Old logs, sheds, woodpiles, and piles of debris are all hot spots.

Vaccines

If you have a lot of snakes in your area, you may want to have Fido vaccinated against snake bites. This isn’t a one-stop fix for every type of rattlesnake. Your pooch will also need regular booster shots. Ask your vet for more information.

Tips

If your canine companion does get bit, contact your vet immediately. Dogs can—and often do—survive encounters with rattlers, but it’s absolutely crucial to get your pup treated immediately.
