DIY Cat Beds

February 15, 2022
Love Your Pet Day is coming up on February 20th! If you have a kitty, make a note to pay Fluffy some extra attention. Cats are quite independent: they clean themselves, don’t need to be walked, and spend most of their time sleeping. In fact, one of the best things you can do for your furry buddy is provide her with plenty of beds and comfy napping spots. Store-bought beds are great, but you can also make your own. A local vet lists some DIY kitty beds in this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cypress, TX animal clinic.

Basic Bed

This one is super simple. Just take two rectangles of material, and put them on top of one another, with the outsides facing in. Sew them together, leaving a small hole in one spot. Using that opening, fill it with stuffing. Then close it up. Done!

Sweater Bed

This is a great way to upcycle a sweater that’s worn out, stained, or ripped. The first thing you want to do is sew the wrists closed. Then, fold the torso into an O shape and sew it into place, leaving the neck open. Next, sew the arms to the torso. Then, fill the whole thing with stuffing, using the neck hole. Then, sew it shut. Voila!

Hammock Bed

You’ll need an end table or coffee table with four legs. Cut a piece of material to go with it. This should be a little smaller than the table. Use Velcro or twine to attach the corners to the legs. Then, all you need to do is tell your feline buddy not to use it. She’ll jump right in!

Upcycle Options

You can also turn ordinary household items into beds. This works with boxes, baskets, crates, hat boxes, and storage totes. All you really need to do is add a pillow or folded blanket. However, you use paint, varnish, or contact paper to make it look nice and/or match your decor.

Tape Bed

Here’s an experiment to try for fun. Trace an outline onto the floor with masking tape. It can be a circle, square, oval, or octagon. If possible, put it in a sunbeam. Chances are, your furball will choose it as her next napping spot! Has it been a while since Fluffy came in for an appointment? Contact Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cypress, TX animal clinic!
