Fido’s First Grooming Appointment

June 15, 2023

We have some breaking news to share with you here at Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cypress, TX pet hospital, and the puparazzi are pretty excited about it: our salon is open! There’s a lot to be said for the ease and convenience of taking your pooch to a groomer when he needs a glow-up. However, there are a few things to keep in mind here. A local vet goes over some of them below.

Scheduling

Groomers get particularly busy at this time of year, as many of our canine companions need haircuts in addition to their baths. Be sure to book enough time for what you want. That first appointment may run a little long, as it’s going to be a  meet and greet between Fido and his new stylist.

Services

Groomers typically offer some a la carte services and add-ons, such as nail trims and paw shaves. These are best left for subsequent appointments, though. For that first visit, you just want the basics. This is a chance for Fido and his groomer to get to know each other, and for your pup to get comfortable with the process.

 Communication

Do you want to get Fido a cute summer cut? Your pooch may look adorable with a teddy bear cut, or with his fur cut to make him look like a dinosaur. The key here is to be very clear about what you’re asking for. We’d recommend bringing a picture of what you want. This can help prevent miscommunications or confusion about what different cuts are called.

Prep Work

You don’t need to do much in preparation, though you may want to give your furry pal a good brushing before taking him into the salon. The biggest thing is making sure Fido has been walked beforehand. A fun play session won’t hurt, either. Dogs are always calmer after they’ve worked off their zoomies!

Medical Grooming

Some pups require medical grooming. As the name suggests, medical grooming entails things that fall between grooming and veterinary care, such as anal gland expression and ear hair trims. These processes should only be done by professionals, and only if your vet recommends it. If you aren’t sure whether your furry pal needs medical grooming, consult your vet.
