Do you keep your cat inside? That’s definitely a great option: Fluffy is both safer and healthier staying inside, where she isn’t exposed to threats like weather, wild animals, and traffic. However, some of our feline pals are very, very adventurous, and are determined to slip out for some fun in the sun. Fortunately, there are some potential compromises here. One is to offer your furball a catio. Another option? Walking her on a leash. This isn’t going to be right for every kitty, but some of our furry pals really do enjoy it. A local vet offers some tips on this in this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair, TX pet hospital.
Benefits
Fluffy will benefit from the exercise and stimulation walks provide. Leashed strolls may be a particularly good option for former strays, cats that were previously allowed outside, and kitties that are just super curious and energetic. Of course, it’s also good exercise for you!
Gear
It’s very important to get good gear. A comfy, sturdy harness that fits well is a must. Start by just letting Fluffy wear it indoors when you’re there to keep an eye on her. It may take your furry bff time to get accustomed to her gear. That’s only to be expected. Once she’s gotten used to it, attach a leash and let her drag it around. Again, keep a close eye on your little buddy: you don’t want her getting tangled up!
Venturing Out
When your furry friend is comfortable wearing her gear, it’s time to take her for a test run. Make sure your kitty is microchipped and up to date on her vaccines and parasite control products first. When you get outdoors, take a moment to see how Fluffy reacts. If she seems nervous, don’t force her to stay outside. It’s much better to just let sleeping kitties lie, so to sleep. It’s also important to choose safe routes. Avoid busy roads and spots where there are likely to be stray dogs. You’ll also need to be careful with trees. The last thing you want is for your feline buddy to run up a tree and get her leash tangled in the branches!
