Taking Fido to the Beach

August 15, 2016
Are you planning to hit the beach this summer? Our canine friends also enjoy going to the shore. Texas’ beautiful beaches can be very dangerous for Fido, however. You’ll want to take some precautions to keep your faithful pet safe and healthy. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cypress, TX animal hospital, a local vet lists some great beach safety tips for dogs.

Swimming Lessons

Not all of our canine pals are good swimmers. If your furry friend can’t swim, give him some lessons before you bring him to the sea. Even dogs that can swim well can easily get into trouble with currents and riptides. Remember, Fido only has to go a short distance out for the water to be over his head. Stay near calm, shallow areas, and avoid areas with strong currents or a lot of wakes.

Training

Make sure Fido knows important commands like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. This is very important! Proper training can help you keep your pooch from running off or approaching a dangerous area.

Heat

Dogs can easily get overheated at the beach. Bring plenty of water for your furry buddy, and keep an eye out for signs that Fido is getting too hot, such as vomiting, diarrhea, heavy panting, or excessive drooling. If you do see any of these red flags, immediately give your pup some water, bring him to a cool area, and call your vet.

Paw Care

Fido can get painful paw blisters by running around on hot sand, especially after he’s been swimming. It’s also very easy for your pet to cut himself on sharp shells or objects hidden in the sand. Use paw balm or paw wax to protect your dog’s delicate paw pads, and check his furry feet for cuts and scrapes.

Fur and Skin

Did you know that dogs can get sunburns? Pups with thin or pale fur are especially at risk. Ask your vet for advice on using sunscreen on your canine buddy. Also, remember to rinse Fido off before heading home, to get the salt and sand out of his fur.
