5 Reasons To Adopt A Greyhound

April 1, 2023

April is Adopt A Greyhound Month! Greyhounds are very sweet and intelligent, and they can make absolutely wonderful pets. If you’re considering bringing a new pooch into your home, a Greyhound may be a perfect fit. A local vet lists some reasons why in this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair, TX animal clinic.

They’re Super Sweet

Greyhounds really have ‘pawesome’ personalities. Smart and loyal, these gentle pooches tend to be very affectionate and loving, and are quite the little cuddlebugs. Those sweet, soulful eyes may very well melt your heart!

They’re Apartment Friendly

One may think that a Greyhound would fit best with an owner that likes to run. While Fido can make a good jogging buddy, he actually isn’t super active. Greyhounds usually need a few good walks a day. Once they’ve burned that energy off, they tend to spend the rest of their time napping. That makes them a great fit for people who live in apartments, or people who don’t have big yards.

Family Friendly

Are you looking for a pooch that is great with kids? A Greyhound may very well fit the bill! Because they are so calm and lovable, they can make great family pets. Gentle and timid, the Greyhound is more likely to freeze than attack if frightened by something. They can also do well with cats. However, it’s best if they’re raised together: Fido is a sighthound, so he does have a deep-seated instinct to run and chase after things.

They Need Love

As you may know, Texas is one of the few states that still allows Greyhound racing; the practice has been discontinued nearly everywhere else. While there aren’t as many ex-race dogs in need of adoption as there once were, there are still many former racers out there in desperate need of good homes. Giving one of these sweet dogs a happy retirement may be a very rewarding experience!

Tips

Greyhounds do have a few unique qualities that potential owners should be aware of. For instance, they are very sensitive to chemicals. Also, their blood test results will be a bit different from those of other pups. Ask your vet for more information.
