Helping A Rescue Cat Settle In

March 15, 2023
March is Rescue Cat Month! That’s one cause we’re purrfectly happy to support. Of course, getting adopted is a huge change for Fluffy, so she’ll need time to adjust. A local vet offers some advice on helping your new buddy get settled in this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair, TX animal clinic.

Safe Space

Fluffy is going to need some time to settle in. Start her out in a quiet area, such as a spare room, and just give her some time to relax and adjust. Offer all the kitty luxuries, such as toys, treats, and catnip.

Conversation

One thing that can help your feline pal feel safe and loved? Just talking to her! It doesn’t matter what you say … it’s the tone of your voice that’s important. (Baby talk is optional, though kitties do seem to like it.)

Purr Activation

It’s important to gain Fluffy’s trust. That will only happen if she knows that she can start and stop cuddle time when she wants. Never force attention on a kitty! Instead, sit on the floor, hold out a treat or a toy, and call your furry buddy to you. (Tip: make that ‘psst psst’ sound. Many cats respond to it!)

Keep Kitty In

We can’t overstate the importance and benefits of keeping your furball indoors. Cats are exposed to many dangers in the great outdoors, such as cars, weather, wild animals, and chemical exposure. Teach Fluffy that she’s an inside kitty from day one. Even former strays can learn to love the indoor life, once they adjust.

Veterinary Care

One of the first things you’ll want to do is bring Fluffy to the vet for a thorough exam. If your feline buddy hasn’t been spayed or neutered yet, you’ll want to get that appointment scheduled ASAP. Your kitty will also need to get caught up on her vaccines, parasite control, and exams. This is a great time to get some care tips!

Stimulation

Make your home as fun and comfy for Fluffy as possible. Offer kitty luxuries, like soft beds and a cat tower, and provide lots of toys for her to pounce on. Playing with your furry friend every day will help her feel loved and safe. It’s also great for bonding! Do you have questions about cat care?
