Caring For A Blind Pet

May 1, 2022
Did you know that May 3rd is Specially-Abled Pets Day? Pets that are a little less than perfect often have a very hard time getting adopted. This is very sad, because they tend to be very loving and loyal. In many cases, they don’t need so much extra care as just different care. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair, TX animal clinic, a local vet, offers some tips on caring for a blind pet in this article.

Don’t Sneak Up

One thing that is a huge pet peeve for many ision-impaired pets is being surprised. Take care not to startle your pet, especially when coming up from behind. Stomp your foot or clap your hands before approaching them.

Offer Appropriate Toys

Toys that make noise are great for pets that can’t see very well. Pick playthings with bells or noisemakers. Another good option would be toys that hide treats.

Keep A Routine

While all pets tend to do best on steady schedules, this is particularly important for blind pets. Try to stick to a steady schedule for meals, walks, and playtime.

Maintain A Normal Home

One thing that can really throw vision-impaired pets off is obstacles they weren’t expecting. Try to avoid leaving things on the floor where they may be stepped on. (You probably can’t keep the cat from getting in Fido’s way, but that’s another topic.)

Offer Safe Places

You may find that your furry pal enjoys having a little safe space of their own, such as a crate. Keep the door open, so they can retreat whenever they want some room.

Petproofing

You’ll need to be extra careful with your furry friend. Fence off potentially-dangerous areas such as pools, fireplaces, and stairwells. Do your pets need veterinary care? Contact us here at Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair, TX animal clinic, today!
