Kitten Care Tips

March 1, 2021
Cuddly Kitten Day is March 23rd. We know, any day is a good day for cuddling kittens. However, if you’ve recently adopted a baby cat, read on! A veterinarian offers some tips on caring for little Fluffy in this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair pet clinic.

Safety First

Kittens are basically tiny, adorable little bundles of mischief. Little Fluffy will want to examine everything in her new domain, to see what she can and can’t eat, sleep on, or play with. This can be very dangerous! Make your home safe for your furry friend by removing or securing things like toxic plants, medications, wires and cords, and anything small or sharp. Keep major appliances, like dryers and toilets, closed when not in use, and get into the habit of checking beneath chairs and recliners before sitting down.

Meet The Doctor

Your tiny furball will need to come in a few times during that first year. In addition to being microchipped and spayed or neutered, little Fluffy will need her initial exams, screenings, and vaccinations. You’ll also want to get her started on parasite control.

Teach Proper Petiquette

This is the time for you to teach little Fluffy what is and is not acceptable behavior. Nip bad habits, like biting and scratching, in the bud. Don’t punish your kitty for misbehaving: just say ‘No’ or ‘Bad kitty’ in a firm, disapproving tone. You can also blow in her face or make a loud noise.

Form The Bond

It’s very important for cats to feel loved and safe. The more you talk to your kitty and interact with her, the more interactive she’ll become. Pay lots of attention to your little feline friend! Talk to her, play with her, and let her snooze in your arms or on your lap. Kittens often think of their humans as second parents, but you have to nurture that bond. Taking time to cuddle your pet now will help you start your new relationship on the right paw.

Be Prepared To Be Charmed

All baby animals are cute, with the possible exception of the baby aye aye, which looks a bit nightmarish. However, kittens are almost impossibly cute. It won’t take your little ball of fur long at all to melt your heart! Here at Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair pet hospital, we’re here to help. Call us anytime!
