Ways to Help Homeless Pets Over the Holidays

December 1, 2020
The holidays are upon us, after a long and trying year. Many people pay extra attention to their favorite charities at this time of year, and really make an effort to help those in need. There are many homeless pets out in shelters or on the streets. They need all the help they can get! In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair animal clinic, a local vet lists some ways to help them.

Donations

There are many wonderful animal charities out there who are trying to help as many pets as possible. Many of them rely on donations and volunteers to get by. Monetary donations are always extremely helpful, but you can also drop off supplies or food. Many animal rescues have wishlists and donation guidelines on their websites. Of course, you can also call and ask.

Volunteer

Are you taking some time off around the holidays? Consider doing a bit of work for a local rescue. You may find this to be a very fulfilling and rewarding experience. It always feels great to help those in need, and give back to your community a bit.

Foster

If you’re ready for a bit more of a commitment, you may want to consider fostering. If you’re working from home, or your kids are home schooling, this may actually be the perfect time for it. Of course, you’ll need to consider your schedule, household, and budget, as well as any other pets you have. One thing to keep in mind when it comes to fostering is that many people find it difficult to say goodbye when the time comes. Those moments are definitely bittersweet. However, if you think you’ll have a hard time, maybe stick to one of the other options.

Support Local TNR Programs

Pet overpopulation is a huge problem. That’s why there’s been an increased focus on spaying and neutering in recent decades. Consider donating to a local Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) clinic.

Share The Word

One of the easiest, yet most effective, things you can do is simply spread the word about pets in need. Even sharing posts on social media can help! You never know: reposting pics of that cute dog or cat who needs a home may change that pet’s life! Happy Holidays from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair animal clinic.
