Tips for Walking Your Dog

November 1, 2020
Does your canine buddy get super excited when he thinks it’s time for a walk? Fido’s pre-walk dance routine is pretty adorable. Just be sure to put your dog’s health and safety first when taking him out. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair animal clinic, a veterinarian offers some tips for walking Fido.

Roadside

When walking your furry bff along the side of a road, always walk so that you’re facing oncoming traffic. Keep Fido to the outside, so that you’re closer to the street.

Leashes

Choose a good, sturdy leash, one that won’t snap if your pup lunges after the neighbor’s cat. Retractable leashes are great in some situations, but can be dangerous in others. Don’t use these around potential hazards, such as riverbanks or busy roads. Fido could get into trouble if the mechanism jams!

Terrain

Keep an eye on the ground. Steer Fido around potential hazards, like sharp rocks or broken glass. When it’s hot out, keep him off scorching tar and asphalt. Also, don’t let your four-legged pal sniff around areas that could be housing snakes, spiders, or other critters!

Sound

Many people like to wear earbuds when walking their pets. This is fine, but don’t turn the volume up too loud. It’s important for you to be able to hear things like brakes squealing or dogs barking.

Paw Care

Keep Fido’s paws in good shape! Clipping your furry pal’s nails regularly will help keep them from growing too long or snagging on things. Paw balm or wax will protect and moisturize those cute toe beans.

Training

Could Fido stand to work on his petiquette? Incorporate some training into your pup’s daily walks, and go over basic commands like Sit and Stay. Lunging is another common problem. If your canine companion pulls on the leash, immediately change direction. Sooner or later, he’ll realize that pulling will just backfire, and won’t actually get him where he wants to go.

Hacks

Do you sometimes find yourself running around, gathering up a bunch of things, while your furry friend does that hurry-up-I-really-need-to-go dance? Designate a bag or jacket for walking Fido. Keep things like phone chargers, keys, a flashlight, earbuds, treats, and waste baggies in it.  That way, you only have to grab one thing.
