Checklist For Adopting A Shelter Dog

October 1, 2019
October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! While we think any month is a great time for adopting shelter dogs, we’re more than happy to help shed light on this topic. Adopting from a shelter is a great way to find your new pet. It’s also a chance for you to give that one lucky pooch a new lease on life! In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair, TX animal clinic, a local vet lists some things that will help you get Fido started off on the right paw in his new home.

Shopping List

Before you bring Fido home, you’ll need to do some shopping. A comfy doggy bed is a must. Your pup will also need lots of toys. Your list should also contain ID tags, dishes, treats, grooming supplies, a collar or harness, a good leash, food, waste baggies, and a crate or carrier.

Puppyproofing

Some of our canine buddies will eat or chew, well, just about anything. Since you won’t know whether or not Fido is prone to mischief, it’s best to err on the side of caution. Remove anything that could be dangerous, such as toxic plants, plastic bags and ties, wires and cords, chemicals, and medication. You’ll also want to keep anything small or sharp, such as beads, coins, buttons, keys, safety pins, and craft kit pieces, in secure spots. (Tip: check the ASPCA site for a list of toxic plants.)

Make Your Yard Dog Safe

Do you have a yard for Fido to play in? Make sure your fencing is secure. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate. If you have a pool, it’s best to put a fence around it. Also, one of the first things you’ll want to do is teach your pet where the stairs are. That way, he can get out again if he falls in accidentally.

Veterinary Appointment

One of the first things you’ll want to do is introduce Fido to his new vet. Although shelter dogs are typically fixed and current on their vaccinations and parasite control, your pooch will need a thorough exam. Microchipping should also be on the agenda. This is a great chance to get some specific advice on your new pet’s care regimen! Is your dog due for an exam, vaccines, or parasite control?
