Keeping Your Pet Hydrated

June 1, 2019
Summer is here! Making sure your pet stays hydrated is very important! This time of year can be quite dangerous for our animal companions. Fido and Fluffy are both wearing fur coats, and don’t have many ways to cool off. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair, TX pet clinic, a local veterinarian offers tips on keeping your pet hydrated.

Multiple Stations

If you have multiple pets, a large home, and/or a yard for your furry pal to play in, set out more than one water station. Clean the bowls daily, as otherwise they will harbor dangerous germs.

Pet Fountain

Did you know that many pets prefer running water? Consider getting your furry friend a little fountain. This is a great idea for people with kitties that drink from the faucet.

Wet Food

Canned food and kibble both have their own pros and cons. One of the benefits of canned food is that it does have a higher moisture content than kibble. If you do give your pet dry food, ask your vet for advice on adding water or broth to it.

Automated Waterers

Automated waterers are another thing to look into. These come in especially handy if your animal companion stays home alone. Ask your vet for tips, first, and be sure to read reviews.

Ice Cube

On really hot days, go ahead and drop an ice cube into your pet’s bowl. You can also make ice cubes out of broth, and offer your pet one or two of those. Of course, some dogs like to chew on ice. You can get molds for Fido that lets you make him customized frozen treats. Just don’t give him too much at once. Ask your vet for more information.

Treats

If there’s one thing all our furry buddies have in common, it’s a love for snacks. Choose treats with high moisture content at this time of year. Sodium-free beef, fish, or chicken broth is a great choice for both Fido and Fluffy. Cats may also enjoy some kitty milk, which you can find in pet stores. As for Fido, buy or make him some snacks, like doggy ice cream or pupsicles. You’ll find a variety of recipes online.
