6 Things to Teach Your Puppy

March 15, 2019
National Puppy Day is coming up March 23! That first year is a crucial time for little Fido, as he’s got a lot to learn about life. In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair pet clinic, a vet lists some things you’ll want to teach your new puppy.

Proper Chewing Habits

Puppies are notorious for chewing. They often chew to deal with the pain of teething. Our canine buddies are also very curious, and tend to investigate things by, well, trying to taste them. This can be very dangerous! Offer your furry buddy lots of safe, suitable chew toys. (You’ll also need to do some puppyproofing.)

Housebreaking

Housebreaking is definitely on the agenda! We recommend taking little Fido out first thing in the morning, just before bed, and after every meal. Dogs can hold their pee about one hour for each month of their age, so adjust your walking schedule accordingly. When your pet goes outside, immediately reward him by giving him treats and praise, and telling him he’s a good boy.

The Crate Is A Safe Place

Used properly, crates can be great tools. Ideally, you want your pup to think of his crate as a cozy little den. Add bedding and soft toys, and give the little guy treats and praise in his crate. (Note: although you may want to crate little Fido overnight, during the day he should never be crated for more than a few hours.)

Table Manners

Puppies are almost impossibly cute, so it’s easy to accidentally spoil them. However, you don’t want to go too crazy here. If little Fido learns that you’ll share your food if whenever looks sad, you’ll have a hard time breaking his begging habit down the road.

Basic Doggy Obedience

All dogs should know basic commands like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Start working on your furry friend’s ‘petucation’ right away!

Bathing Is Necessary

Dogs are adorable, but they need some help with their beauty rituals. Get your fuzzy buddy used to being bathed while he’s young. You’ll also want to train little Fido to accept having his teeth brushed and his nails clipped. Please reach out to Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair pet clinic, for all of your puppy’s veterinary care needs. We love watching our canine patients grow from adorable furry toddlers to healthy adults!
