Hug Your Cat Day

June 1, 2018
June 4th is Hug Your Cat Day! Kitties deserve to be hugged every day, but this is a great chance to show Fluffy some extra TLC! In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair animal clinic, a local vet discusses why—and how—to hug your cat.

Why Hugging Cats Is Important

Kitties are truly special gifts. They have a way of keeping us smiling with their cute furry faces, adorable antics, and hilarious quirks. Cats make our houses into homes, and offer us unconditional love and friendship. Fluffy doesn’t ask for very much in return, aside from food, water, a clean litterbox, toys, ear scritches, a window view, the lion’s share of space on your bed, scratching posts, and the occasional empty box.

The Magic of Cat Hugs

As it turns out, cat hugs may be a little bit magic. For instance, kitty purrs are very special. Fluffy’s little motor runs at frequencies between 25 and 150 Hertz. These frequencies have been shown to promote healing and improve bone density, and are even used in physical therapy. Kitty purrs also are very soothing for people who are coping with anxiety, depression, stress, and/or grief.

Kitty Rules

There are some strict rules about hugging Fluffy. First, never force hugs on a cat. If your kitty is cranky, just offer her a treat and let her be. Of course, some of our furry pals are little cuddlebugs, that want to be hugged 24/7. Just remember to let your furball decide when cuddle time starts and stops.

How To Hug Your Cat

When picking Fluffy up, hold her so that her weight is supported by her bottom or back legs. Never hold your feline friend by the stomach. This can actually be very dangerous! When your furball wants to get down, put her down gently. Don’t let go until all four paws touch down.

Cats That Don’t Like Hugs

Some kitties prefer to be admired from a distance. If your feline overlord is aloof, you can still make her feel loved and safe by giving her toys and treats. Talking to your cat is also important: Fluffy may not know (or care) what you’re saying, but she’ll appreciate the communication. Do you have questions about cat care?
