The Advantages of Adopting a Senior Pet

November 1, 2016
November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! Older pets often have a hard time finding loving homes. These sweet dogs and cats have many wonderful qualities to offer, and can make absolutely wonderful animal companions! In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your animal clinic, a local Cy-Fair veterinarian discusses some great reasons to consider adopting a senior pet.

Lovable Temperaments

As dogs and cats age, they often develop a calm, friendly demeanor that is truly delightful. Fido wants nothing more than to snooze at your feet, while Fluffy may be perfectly content to curl up on your lap or on the nearest chair.

Less Destructive

Puppies and kittens are super cute, but they can also be quite mischievous! Dogs in their golden years are typically much more interested in naps, belly rubs, and ear scritches than in digging up your yard. And as for Fluffy, she’s more likely to sprawl out in her favorite sunbeam than knock everything off your coffee table.

Lower Activity Needs

Just like people, pets slow down as they age. Fido may only need a short daily walk, and Fluffy probably won’t be very interested in pouncing on your toes. This makes older animals a great choice for apartment dwellers, seniors, and anyone with disabilities. They can even be a good match for children!

Prior Experience

Generally, older dogs and cats that are up for adoption have been pets before. Fido and Fluffy probably already know what is expected of them. For instance, senior dogs are typically already housetrained, while older cats may know not to bite or scratch.

Cuteness

Senior pets are absolutely adorable! Fido looks very charming and sweet with grey in his muzzle, and will be super cute when he’s slowly walking along beside you. And as for Fluffy, she may very well be a sleepy, lovable bundle of purrs.

Love

Dogs and cats are quite intuitive, and seem to understand when they’ve been saved. It’s no wonder that Fido and Fluffy often completely adore their rescuers! When you give that one special pet a second chance at happiness, you’re truly changing that animal’s world. You’ll be rewarded with unconditional love and purrs or tail wags, which are all priceless gifts in our book. Do you have questions about your senior pet’s care?
