Preparing for Your New Kitten

October 15, 2016
Have you recently decided to adopt a kitten? Congratulations! You are certainly in for some adorable moments. You’re also in for quite a bit of pet parenting! In this article from Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair animal hospital, a local vet discusses preparing for a new kitten.

Kittenproofing

Kittens are nothing if not curious! Fluffy will want to investigate every inch of her new kingdom, and figure out what she can and can’t play with. You’ll need to do some kittenproofing. Remove or secure toxic plants; plastic bags, wires, and ties; wires and cords; medicines; chemicals, such as automotive products and household cleaning agents; small items; and anything sharp or breakable. You’ll also want to keep appliances, such as dryers, closed. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Supplies

Before you bring your new furbaby home, you’ll need to do some shopping. Your kitten will need dishes, toys, treats, food, a litterbox and litter, and bedding. You may also want to get little Fluffy a good scratching post, and perhaps some kitty furniture, like a cat tent or tower. If you have other pets, set these things up in a quiet back room at first, so your tiny feline will have a safe place to settle in. Ask your vet for advice on introducing your baby cat to her furry roommates.

Veterinary Care

Little Fluffy will need to see the vet a few times during that crucial first year. Your little ball of fur will need her initial exams, vaccines, and parasite control, as well as microchipping and spay/neuter surgery. In between appointments, watch your feline friend closely for any signs of illness. Kittens are very small and fragile, and they can get sick very fast! Ask your vet for specific advice.

Purrs

As your feline overlord takes control of your home, you’ll likely often find her wanting to snuggle up with you. Baby cats love being cuddled, as it makes them feel safe. Indulge your tiny furball, and pay lots of attention to her. It won’t take long for little Fluffy to start her engine! Savor this special time, and take lots of pictures. Kitten kisses and purrs are some of life’s most precious gifts! Please contact us here at Fairfield Animal Hospital, your Cy-Fair veterinary clinic, anytime. We love watching kittens grow from adorable bundles of mischief into happy, healthy adult cats!
