Tips for Great Senior Cat Care

Is your feline friend starting to slow down? Kitties generally age gradually and gracefully, but you will notice some changes in your furball as she enters her golden years. You may need to make some minor changes to your kitty’s care regimen in order to keep Fluffy happy and healthy as she ages. Mobility

Senior cats often have difficulty climbing stairs, or even getting up onto beds or sofas at naptime. Pet ramps or stairs, or strategically-placed Ottomans, will help Fluffy climb onto the furniture. If your home has multiple stories, keep litter boxes and water dishes on each floor. That way, your furball won’t have to climb the stairs each time she needs to use the facilities, or gets thirsty.

Diet

A good, nourishing diet is crucial to your senior cat’s health. Don’t let your feline friend become obese, as those extra pounds are very bad for her! Supplements may be helpful. Fish oil, for instance, may be beneficial to pets with arthritis, as it can help lubricate stiff joints. Ask your vet for specific recommendations, including advice on switching to senior-formula pet food.

Veterinary Care

As Fluffy ages, she may need more frequent vet visits, so your vet can monitor her for any signs of developing health problems. Vaccines are also very important, as is parasite prevention, so be sure to stay current with your kitty’s preventative care. In between visits, keep a close eye on your cat for any signs of sickness. Some common signs of illness in kitties include vomiting; diarrhea; hiding; excessive or poor grooming; changes in appetite; and weight loss or gain. Litter box issues can also be a red flag. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Activity

Believe it or not, your cat may sleep even more as she ages. When Fluffy is awake, try to keep her active. Use interactive toys, like a laser pointer, to get her moving.
